"The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" was the original late-night phenomenon which paved the way for it's modern format. "There's Johnny!" is a scripted comedy series created by Paul Reiser which relives this magic, behind the curtain, through the lens of a fictional ensemble circa 1972. Partnering with the Carson Estate, the series showcases actual Johnny Carson aired footage, but with scripted backstories to create a nostalgic tribute to one of the greatest shows of all time.
Going Back In Time
The original Tonight Show stage was reconstructed with exquisite art direction to match the original show. Careful consideration was made to ensure the broadcast hardware and technology shown on screen, including the original NBC cameras and monitors, were indeed of the period. Visual Effects serviced several departments to help accentuate details, such as matching signage and archival footage, adding overall authenticity.
Treasure Trove
The real magic of the show was having access to, and thoughtfully incorporating, various original clips of Johnny Carson. In a memorable scene where the main character stumbles upon archival film of the original show, we are given a warm glimpse at this truly iconic legacy. The filming of this scene was simple: run dummy 8mm film through an actual Moviscop and composite the digitized archival footage in post.
Flying Over Burbank
In one of the larger vfx sequences, our ensemble takes flight in a helicopter over Burbank. We shot on stage with a gutted helicopter cabin and removed the doors to film comfortably from one side. It was my pleasure to remind the AD that the actors should be projecting their lines over the non-existent roar of the engine and propellors.
Long Live The King
While the series did not get picked up for a second season, it was truly a pleasure to work with David Gordon Green and Paul Reiser, in his love-letter to the original king of late-night. All episodes from Season 1 can currently be watched on Peacock.
